Indian Ocean islands are becoming popular with German tourists.

Three small island groups are winning more and more German fans, the fvw Destination Ranking 2020 showed.

The number of overnight stays by German tourists in the Seychelles increased by 18% last year and has nearly doubled over the last five years. Mauritius is another winner on the German market with strong growth in recent years, although there was a slight downturn in overnight stays last year. The Maldives also made a good comeback last year with a 10% rise in German overnight stays after a 25% decline in 2018.

In contrast, Australia and New Zealand again performed more weakly last year. Overnight stays by German visitors in Australia dropped by 12% in 2019, although the bush fires at the end of the year are unlikely to have played a significant role in this fall, according to experts. Similarly, New Zealand saw a single-digit fall in German overnight stays, although it is the third fastest growing market in a five-year comparison.
