Antalya and Hurghada win late German bookings in July

Turkey and Egypt were the two main winners as Germans booked more last-minute summer holidays last month but demand weakened for Greece and again slumped for Spain, the latest monthly package holiday booking figures from Amadeus show.

Overall, the ten largest destinations, which account for about two-thirds of all German package holiday bookings and last-minute trips, reduced their combined drop in bookings to 1.6% compared to last July. In June, they had been 5% behind the previous year’s figure.  

But last month’s improvement included dramatic differences in demand for the individual destinations (click on interactive graphic to see previous months’ figures). 

Antalya, which remained the largest destination airport, performed well last month with a 10% rise in bookings as Germans headed for the Turkish Riviera.

Hurghada (+11%) showed its first growth of this year as demand picked up for Red Sea holidays compared to the same time last year. Moreover, demand for Marsa Alam (-1%) improved after several months of lower bookings.

In contrast, there was diverging demand for Greece’s three biggest destinations for German holidaymakers after strong growth in June. Bookings for Kos (+21%) soared for the second month in a row. But Heraklion (-6%) and Rhodes (-5%) both fell back compared to July 2018.

Once again, there was no pain relief for Spain which has seen a long-running downturn in German package holiday bookings, according to the Amadeus figures.

Palma, which remains the second-biggest destination airport, fell back by 10% last month, which is broadly in line with trends for most of this year.

There was more bad news for the Canary Islands, which have seen double-digit falls in German bookings for many consecutive months. Fuerteventura (-25%) was again the worst performer while there were also heavy drops for Las Palmas (-18%) and Tenerife South (-17%).

Amadeus Leisure IT (formerly Traveltainment) claims to handle the bulk of offline (travel agency) and online bookings for tour operator holidays on the German market, making its booking figures a reliable indicator of demand trends.
